Common business word partnerships: Practice ‘set’
2016/06/14
This week, we are going to do more practice of how to use ‘set’ and ‘set up’. Last time, we practiced in an email. This week, we’re going to practice in a conversation.

Task 1: Read the transcript of this meeting between Janice and her boss. Complete the gaps with set or set up.

“Ok, what’s next on the agenda?”

“Hum. We need to talk about the Princeton project.”

“Oh yes. How’s that going?”

“Well, the teams have been working really hard on it, and have completed all the objectives you ___(1)___ for them before the project started. They’ve ___(2)___ the payment schedule for it, and the prices ___(3)___.”

“Wow, that’s quick. It seems that they’ve ___(4)___ new records for project implementation.”

“Yes, they’ve done really well. Because they’ve done a lot of overtime and put so much effort into it, I’m ___(5)___ a new vacation schedule for all team members. I think we need to give them some time off.”

“Good idea. Actually, I’d like to meet them to thank them myself. Can you ___(6)___ a time for me to meet them individually?”

“Sure.”

“Ok, anything else?”

“Mary Jones.”

“Oh yes. Can you ___(7)___ an appointment for her too? Have you ___(8)___ the new training program for new employees?”

“Yes, it’s been done. Actually, that ___(9)___ to thinking…”

“Yes?”

“I think we need to change our training provider?”

“Really? You’re not happy with the one we’re using at the moment?”

“Well, it just ___(10)___ me to wondering whether we might be able to find another one. I think most people are bored with the programs this one offers.”

“Ok, well, ___(11)___ some interviews with some of the others in town, let me know what their prices are, and I’ll ___(12)___ aside some extra funds.”

“Thanks.”

“Ok”.

“Ok, well, set up some interviews with some of the others in town, let me know what their prices are, and I’ll set aside some extra funds.”
