Thomas:Nokia positions their phones as feature-rich and reliable. Motorola differentiates their products by appealing to the youth market. With their Walkman series, Sony Ericsson is exceptionally good at the mass marketing of MP3 phones. They're all using differentiated marketing and they've all come up with winning strategies. So, where does that leave us?
Dennis:In trouble.
Thomas:That's not funny, Dennis.
Dennis:I wasn't trying to be funny. With competition like that, we have to get the positioning right. That's why I think we should consider introducing a low-cost, entry-level model.
Sandra:That's one approach. But I don't see how we're going to build a unique brand with an average product. It's the features of the phone that really drive sales. If the phone isn't distinctive in some way, marketing it is going to be a real challenge. I know that as marketers we're supposed to be able to magically increase consumer preference for our phones, but it would be nice to have something to work with.
Veronica:One problem faced by smaller manufacturers like us is trust. If we come out with something very inexpensive, we'll have to work hard to convince consumers that it's not a cheap piece of junk. Nokia's reliability, for example, is a major factor in their success–and they charge a premium for it.
Sandra:Have we already decided to go the low-cost route? I hope not. We've got amazing designers and some of the best engineers in the business. We have a chance to do something really special here, guys. Let's not waste it. Does the world really need another average cell phone?
