Ok, let’s look at examples of how these verb chunks are used in emails.
Task 2: Read these emails and find and underline the verb chunks from the previous task. Notice how they are used. Look at the example.
Dear Juju,
Sorry to hear that you are having problems with the equipment. The failure may be caused by a faulty switch. Fixing it will involve coming to your office, which I cannot do at this time, as I am now based in Ban Chiao. You could try taking it to the sales department and showing it to them. I recommend not using the machine until you get it fixed.
Dear Chris,
Regarding the personnel problem with Mr Chen, I am sorry to involve you in such an unpleasant situation, but as it was you who recommended him to us in the first place, I cannot help wondering if you knew he would cause us all this trouble. His performance since he arrived has, in my opinion, always been at odds with the recommendation you made for him. Anyway, I will be arriving in Taipei on the 23rd and would like to meet both of you for a discussion about this issue.
Dear Joyce,
Just a few words of explanation about the attached projections. They are based on the results for the three years previous to 2003, and show results region by region using figures which are on file. You will see that, according to the projections, we will only begin to see a satisfactory return after the end of next year, when we should be in credit once again. If we want to improve these results, I propose hiding the regional results, but I don’t think this will make much difference. We will still need to show how we have arrived at the projections.
Dear Marco,
Do you remember last week I showed you my new software program? I have tried it on my home computer, but it doesn’t seem to work. I know my computer is in perfect condition, so that’s not the problem. The program was on sale when I bought it and I did notice the CD has a scratch, so maybe it caused a problem for the computer to read the CD. Anyway, do you think you could show me how to install it?
Dear Joe,
While I am in Beijing, I am expecting a call from Wallis Productions. Please take it for me, and let them know that I have already begun the storyboard, and will begin working on the dialogue when I get back. I don’t want my trip to Beijing to cause them a delay.
Dear Nathan,
We are currently planning a celebration of the first 3 years of the company. This will involve a lot of people from the planning department. I am proposing a meeting for Friday the 10th, in which I would like to personally award all the people who are involved in the XYZ product development project. Please could you let me know who you recommend.
Dear Mike,
I will be away from tomorrow until the middle of the month. I hope you can handle the demonstration on your own, and that you can remember how to operate the projector.
Good luck!
Dear Connie,
Further to our conversation on the phone, I would like to recommend that we go ahead with the presentation for several reasons. If we can show the board that the department is still able to be of use to the company, then I think we can ensure further funding. It is in our best interest to try to produce an excellent pitch as we have always done. For this reason I propose that we meet on Thursday to rehearse the pitch and brainstorm any questions the board might have for us.
Dear Lulu,
Please note that Mr Coginwheel is visiting the plant on Friday. I expect that he will want to see the new loading bay, so please ensure that it is tidy, and that everything is in good order and in place. Also, please remember to ask all machine operatives to wear goggles during his visit. He will expect to see people wearing them. He is looking forward to his visit, and I know with you showing him around, he will be in good hands.
Dear Jonathan,
Please note that I will be arriving at CKS airport on the 29th. I would like to begin my tour by seeing the factories in the North. I would particularly like you to show the assembly line to me. I also plan to see the factories in the South, as I remember that they were under-performing a few months ago. I would like you to show me how you have managed to increase production so quickly there, and how you ensure that production is always on schedule. I then propose to spend some time talking to the operatives to see if we can get any ideas from them for improvements.
