*‘Show’ has two meanings according to whether the verb chunk includes s/o or not. With s/o, ‘show’ has a personal meaning: a person is showing a person something. ‘Show me your résumé.’ ‘Show me your kid’s picture’. Without s/o it has an impersonal meaning: ‘The diagram shows how the electrical circuit works.’ ‘These figures show that our market share is increasing.’ Notice what kind of subjects are used in the examples here.
*Notice also, that as in previous units, some of the verbs can have more than one pattern. For example ‘recommend that v.p’. and ‘recommend Ving’; or ‘ensure that v.p.’ and ‘ensure n.p.’
