‘Set’ is often regarded as the most common verb in the English language. Its meaning is quite difficult to pin down, because it has a kind of empty meaning. It usually takes its meaning from other words used with it. This week, we are going to learn some of those meanings, especially the common ways of using it in Business English.

Did you set a date for the next meeting?
In the past our products always set high standards for the rest of the industry.
Oh Lord! I think I forgot to set the alarm in the office. I’ll have to go back and check.
The CEO’s job is to set priorities and company policy.
It’s lucky that we set aside funds for an emergency like this.
We frequently use ‘set’ together with ‘up’ to make a phrasal verb. The difference between ‘set’ and’ set up’ is not about meaning, but about which words are used with each. You should just memorise which words are used with ‘set’ and which words are used with ‘set up’, and don’t worry too much about the difference in meaning.
