Last week we looked at some common business word partnerships you can make with the verbs ‘bring’ and ‘leave’. This week, we are going to do some work on the verb ‘hold’.
The partnerships for hold can be divided into four broad areas of meaning.
1. Some word partnerships with ‘hold’ mean ‘an event’: “We held the reception at the Grand Hotel.”
2. Some mean ‘delay’: “A mechanical failure in the factory held up production.”
3. Some have the meaning of ‘possess’: “Our company holds the patent for this drug.”
4. There are other word partnerships also which do not fall into these three main categories of meaning.
Task 1: Look at these word partnerships for hold and sort them into the table below. Look at the examples.

Check out your answers in the table below.
*‘The price is holding well’ means that there is not too much movement in the (share) price. Here, use ‘hold’ after ‘the price’.
*Use ‘hold the position (of n.p.)’ to describe a job title: ‘She used to hold the position of HR Director.’
*Use ‘hold the position that v.p.’ to express your point of view. ‘I hold the position that we should expand aggressively.’
