Part II. Respond to a written request 回覆書面要求

Q6-Q7 評分標準:

•  句子的內容與變化性 -- 是否只用一般的句子,例如"I can set up an interview."還是可以使用子句等稍加複雜化的句子來表達,例如"I will call you Tuesday to discuss setting up an interview."

•  用字的選擇 – 是否僅使用一般程度的單字,如good、beautiful、now等。還是選擇較高層次的單字來表達,例如excellent、charming、currently等。

•  文章結構 – 是否清楚易懂,言之有物,前後連貫。

Q6-Q7 注意事項:

•  每篇email書寫時間為10分鐘,必須回答題目中所有提到的指示。

•  文章必須結構合理,段落中使用適當的連結用詞(connecting words)。

•  語氣與表達方式要適當,例如,寫給未來雇主的工作申請信函,語氣要誠懇有禮。

•  有些許文法上或用字上的錯誤無妨,但不可影響讀者對文章的瞭解。

題目範例:

Direction : Respond to the email as if you have received the e-mail from the A-Hunter Company. In your email to Mr. Anderson, write at least ONE statement about your capability, and TWO statements about your previous work experience.

破題:此類email的回覆不是天馬行空自己想寫什麼就寫什麼,而是要跟據題目的要求,比方說此題:

ONE statement about your capability _______________________ (computer skills)

TWO statements about your experience _______________________ (3-year VP assistant / job duties)

Ideas想好了之後,就可以根據想法來將email成型了。

參考答案:

Dear Mr. Kinderson,

 Please consider me as an applicant for your advertised full-time position as administrative assistant in your HiTech Taipei office.

 My word-processing, and computer skills, which you require, are excellent. I am completely conversant with the current versions of Microsoft Windows, and Office applications.

 Before my move here three weeks ago, I was employed for three years as assistant to the VP of Marketing of Salesforce Inc. in Hong Kong on a full-time basis. My duties there included all office word processing, mailing list management, and such general office functions as telephone answering, faxing, and photocopying.

 I look forward to hearing from you.

另外,要強調的是,句型用法和用字選擇這部份的美化,也是評分要點之一。若email 內呈現的僅是有寫就好,靠一些文字拼湊起來,沒句型之外,用字也很普通,這樣其實無法有效呈現出意思的。請看以下例子:

求職信範例之原始寫法:

Dear Ms. Phillips,

 I want to apply for the Project Manager position you put in the newspaper. I have past experience in a consulting firm and in a bookstore. I'd like to work in an international environment, and I believe I can do it well. I'd like to talk to you about the details of this job, so please email or call me.

Sincerely,

缺點:段落不分明 , 且用字一般 , 句型簡單但無變化 , 內容也不太明確 , 看不出有當 project manager 之實力 。

求職信範例之加強寫法

Dear Ms. Phillips,

 I want to let you know that I am quite interested in the position of Project Manager that you recently advertised.

 I have had two years' experience as a project manager in a consulting firm and about a year as the manager of a large Hong Kong bookstore. I want to work in an international environment and I believe I am well qualified for this position.

 I would very much like to further discuss this position with you and I am available for an interview. Please contact me by email or phone.
