Using 2 Object Verbs

As you may remember, there are some verbs which take 2 objects. Some of these 2 object verb chunks are invertible, and some are not invertible.

This week we are going to look at 2-object verbs. Remember that with these verb chunks, some you can swap the objects and some you cannot. Do the next task.

Task 1: Sort these verb chunks into the table below.

agree with s/o (about/on s/th)

inform s/o (about/of s/th)

prepare s/th (for n.p.)

return s/th (to s/o)

tell s/o s/th

talk about s/th with s/o

talk to s/o (about s/th)

talk to s/o about s/th

tell s/o (about s/th)

tell s/th to s/o

*Remember that with non-invertible verbs you don’t need to mention the second object; but that if you do mention it, you need to add a preposition first.

*Remember that with invertible verbs, when you invert the two objects, you need also to add a preposition.

*Notice that ‘talk’ can be both invertible and non-invertible. This means that you don’t need to use the second object (non-invertible), but if you want to, you need to use ‘about.’ If you want to invert the two objects, you need to change ‘with’ to ‘to.’
