Not only … but also 是各類英文測驗中最常考到的「關聯連接詞」，

而考點一般都落在由 not only 和 but also 所引導的結構【必須完全對等】。

讓我們用簡單的例句來看看Not only … but also 的文法重點

①  Not only you but also I was surprised to see him there.
     不只是你，我也非常驚訝在那兒看到他。
②  They not only made the rules but also enforced them.
     他們不僅訂定那些規則，而且還嚴格執行。
③  Not only did he invite us to his party, but he also gave us gifts.
     他不但邀請我們去參加他的派對，而且還給我們禮物。

重點 ❶：
由 not only 與 but also 所引導的兩個項目雖然在文法上必須對等，但是在語意上卻較著重第二項，因此若用來作為主詞，【動詞必須與第二個名詞一致】，如例句 ① 所示。

重點 ❷：
若 not only 和 but also 引導的是子句時，【句首由 Not only 所引導的子句必須倒裝】，而第二個子句則應由簡單連接詞 but 來引導，副詞 also 必須置於靠近動詞的位置，不可置於主詞之前，如例句 ③ 所示。事實上，也正因為 also 不是連接詞，因此可省略不用；換言之，上列三個例句亦可寫成：

①  Not only you but I was surprised to see him there.

②  They not only made the rules but enforced them.
