Using Verb Chunks
2015/03/17
You will remember from last week that there are 5 or 6 different patterns of verb chunks.

Task 1: Sort the verb chunks into the table below. Look the examples.

 ’d like s/o to V

 feel that v.p.

 find n.p.

 ’d like to V

 find that v.p.

 feel adj

 know n.p

 accept n.p

 help s/o to V

 want to V

 meet n.p.

 help s/o V

 need n.p.

 accept that v.p.

 think that v.p.

 need to V

 know that v.p.

 let s/o V

 like n.p.

 want s/o to V

 need s/o to V

 know ‘wh’ v.p.

 want n.p.

 see n.p.

 make s/o V

V + n.p.
V that + v.p.
V to V
V s/o to V
V s/o V
?
find n.p.
feel that v.p.
’d like to V
’d like s/o to V
help s/o V
feel adj.

Task 1 Feedback:Check out your answers in the language bank below.
V + n.p.
V that + v.p.
V to V
V s/o to V
V s/o V
?

 accept n.p.

 find n.p.

 know n.p

 like n.p.

 meet n.p.

 need n.p.

 see n.p.

 want n.p.

 accept that
v.p.

 feel that v.p.

 find that v.p.

 know that v.p.

 think that v.p.

 ’d like to V

 need to V

 want to V

 ’d like s/o to V

 help s/o to V

 need s/o to V

 want s/o to V

 help s/o V

 let s/o V

 make s/o V

 feel adj

 know ‘wh’ v.p.

*Notice that some of the verbs have more than one chunk. For example ‘accept n.p’ and ‘accept that v.p.’, ‘help s/o to V’ and ‘help s/o V’.

*Notice the two which do not fit any of the other groups: ‘feel adj’ and ‘know ‘why’ v.p..’ We’ll look at these two in more detail later.

*The verb chunks which begin with ‘‘d like’ may seem a bit strange to you. ‘‘d’ means ‘would’, as in ‘I’d like to’, ‘she’d like to’. When writing this verb chunk you can choose to contract it or write out ‘would like to’. However, when speaking, you should always say ‘I’d like to’ not ‘I would like to’.

Ok, let’s look at examples of how these verb chunks are used in emails.

Task 2: Read these emails, and find and underline the verb chunks from the previous task. Notice how they are used. Look at the example.

Dear Jojo,
Thank you for your proposal, which we have studied carefully. We like the proposal, but we need you to provide more details of the market before we know what financial resources we need to give to the project. In particular we need more information about the intended market segment. We already know the product, but we still would like you to think about the marketing strategy more carefully.
Please let me have this information as soon as possible so that we can look at it again.
Best regards

Dear Lucy,
Please find the attached project outline as my boss requested. I know that this is urgent, as my boss wants everyone to read it. Please confirm when you will be able to come to our office to discuss it in more detail.
If you have any questions, please call me.

Dear Kevin,
Thanks for your email explaining your bad performance over the last few months. I’m sorry you feel that your contribution to the team is not being recognized, but I do accept that your salary is rather low compared to others in the group. I am looking into this and would like to meet you to discuss it further. I’ll be in touch.
Sincerely,

Dear Tom,
I’m sorry I don’t know of any other service provider in our area, but let me try to think of some alternatives. I think that an old colleague of mine may be able to help us locate one.

Dear Calvin,
I know about your problems with your family, and I feel sorry that you are in such difficulty. I want to help. Please accept my good wishes, and don’t hesitate to contact me if there’s anything I can do to help you to solve the problem.
Best regards,

Dear George,
I find that there are some spelling mistakes in the draft copy you sent me. Please see my changes on page 10. If you want me to give you more time, I’ll make the printer wait another day before printing all the copies. Please confirm.
Regards,

Task 3: Now choose two verb chunks from each column in the first task and write your own sentences. Make sure your sentences are suitable for business emails.
