Using time chunks with the correct tense
2014/11/25
Last week we learnt about the meaning of time vocabulary, and how important it is to use the correct time chunk with the correct verb tense, past simple, or present perfect. This week, we are going to practice this in more detail.

Task 1: Correct these sentences. Change the verb tense to fit the meaning of the time chunk. Look at the example.

1
I have received your report yesterday.

 I received your report yesterday.
2
So far this morning I sent three emails.

3
During that time I had been to many places.

4
In 1999 I have been worked in Toronto.

5
I write a lot of emails this morning. I think I’ll stop and have some lunch.

6
I have given your details to Anne last week.

7

Task 1 Feedback: Using time chunks with the correct tense

Task 1: Compare your sentences with mine below.

2. So far this morning I have sent three emails.

3. During that time I went to many places.

4. In 1999 I worked in Toronto.

5. I have written a lot of emails this morning. I think I’ll stop and have some lunch.

6. I gave your details to Anne last week.

7. John has talked to Miyuki about my case.

8. John talked to Miyuki about my case last night.

9. Have you seen John recently?

10. I decided to quit my job last week.

Notes:

1. ‘So far’ is unfinished time, so you need the present perfect.

2. Never use past perfect in business English.

3. ‘Have been worked’ is just totally wrong, but it’s a frequent mistake in Taiwan.

4. You need past simple because 1999 is fnished time.

5. Remember present simple (write) means no time. But there is an unfinished time word (this morning) in the sentence, so you need to use present perfect.

6. ‘Last week’ is finished time so you need the past simple.

7. In this sentence, there is no time word at all, so we can assume the time is unfnished, or not important, so you can use present perfect to focus on the result.

8. ‘Last night’ is finished, so you must use past simple.

9. ‘Recently’ is an unfinished time word, so you need to use present perfect.

10. ‘Last week’ is finished, so you need to use past simple.
